Investigation on Conditions of Experimental Animals in Korea.

Abstract
Investigation were conducted to find out the conditions and status of the laboratory animals used during the year 1970 at the 69 palces including many colleges and various research organizations, starting from march 1971 to December of the same year.
Amongth the 69 places originally planned to investigate, 37 places were at first screened out for they were not using laboratory animals for any purpose, founded out form the questionaires sent to them before-hand.
Thus 32 places, that were supposed to have used the labortory animals according to their respones to our questionaires, were subjected to our on-sopt investigations. However, it was found surprisingly that, only at 17 places out of 32 places investigated, were it possible to attain our objectives, of the investigation planned.
Thus 15 places unsatisfactory for our objectives, mostly without or lack of evidence ofr laboratory animals having used, were automatically dropped from the list for our further investigation.
The results of investigation on species of the animal, objectives of the animal used, number of animals used according to body weight size on monothly basis, experimental and feeding conditions at the 17 places were as follows:
1. Laboratory animals at the various places were of species which were consisted of mouse, rat, Guinea pig, hamster, domestic fowl, goose, sheep, goat, dog, pig, Korean cattle and dairy cattle.
Among them, only the mice (ICR-JCL strain) and Guinea pigs (Hartley-Albino) Kept at the National Institute of Health were of indentified atrain for certain.
2. Total 133,490 mice were used throughout the one year period. For the monthly basis, the greatest number of mice used were during the period of january month with 19,947 mice which accounted for nearly 14.6% of the total, where as the June months was the lowest with only 8,770, 6.57% of the total.
For the body weight size-wise, the greatest mumber of mice used were the group ranged from 11gm to 15gm of its body weight with 88,218(66.09% of the total)
For the objective-wise, the greatest number used were for the testing purpose with 54,909 mice (41.13% of the total), follwed by with 46,750(35.02%) for the purpose other than testing and experiment, and witih 31,831 (23.85%) for the experiment purpose.
3. Total 5,540 rat were used during the one year period, but they were not subjected to agreat variation in number throughout the year.
For instance, greatest number used were during the April month with 495 (9.10% of the total), and lowest in the October month with 368(6.75%), of which the difference was not so significant.
Body weights ranged from 100 to 150gm were the greatest number of white mice group used with the number of 2,129(39.14%).
objectively, 4,015 rat were used for the experiment purpose, and 1,425 for the testing purpose.
4. Total 4,360 Guinea pigs were used through out the year, in which the greatest number with 580(13.30 of the total) were used in the April month and the lowest with 177(4.06%) in the january month.
Body weight ranged from 300 to 400 gm were the highest group in number used with equal to 2,347 animls which were more than half the number of the total(53.83%).
Objective-wise, 3,366 Guinea pigs(77.20%) were used for testing purpose and 994 (22.80%) for the experimental purpose, and none for the other purpose.
5. In case of the rabbits, total 3,680 animals were used during the one year period, in which the April month was the highest number of the animals used with equal to 565 (13.32% of the total), and the January month was the least with 114 (3.09%).
Rather ralatively large number of the animals were used during the months of February, April, July, September, and December, but relatively small numbers i January, march, June, August and October.
Body weights ranged from 1,000 to 2,000gm were the highest group used in numberwise with 2,190 rabbits.
Objectivwise, 1,771 animals (48.02% of the total) were used for the testing purpose, and 1,162 (31.51%) and 755 (20.47%) each for the experiment and other purposes, respectively.
6. Besides, other speices involved were 10 hamsters, 409 domestic fowls, 102 geese, 572 sheep, 1,192 goat, 37 dogs, 58 pigs, 163 Korean cattle, and 19 dairy cattle.
Number of the each animals used with respect to its body weight size and objective basis were as shown in tables 6 and Fig. 1 respectively.
7. Flock size of the animals were mostly small scale in its operation, but with a relatively good, lighting system. However, management conditions such as ventilation, heating, water supply, feeding, cleaning and sanitation were rather poor in its systems except the two and three places.
